HALLWAY VIEWS:
Students took a poetry walk to view, analyze, and evaluate one another's poetry and use of text elements.
SELECT VISUAL POETRY DISPLAYS:
Next year I'll do a better job of taking pictures or writing down the text of some of these students' poems. Several were very well written and thoughtful. On most of these displays, you can still see how they experimented with text elements such as font, bold, italics, and color to bring further meaning to the words in their poems.
SELECT HUMUMENT-INSPIRED POEMS:
Based on the work of Tom Phillips, this might be my favorite thing I ask my students to do during our unit. Sometimes, it's amazing to see which words they choose and how they visually interpret these words.
VISUAL POEMS INSPIRED BY THE WORK OF STEVE POWERS:
Students were asked to take a line or poetry, either existing or original, and interpret the line in a visual way.
My Favorite Black-Out Poem of the Year:
Based on the work of Austin Kleon, blackout poems are a great hook for a poetry unit, and they are often funny or surprisingly insightful. Here is my personal favorite from this year:
SELECT VISUAL HAIKU:
Students wrote four haiku about a nature-related topic and were asked to visualize the haiku in any way they saw fit. This was a nice post-state testing afternoon activity.
